Cloud Security Engineer Salary in India

Cloud security engineers in India typically earn more than general security engineers at the same experience level, because the talent pool is thinner than demand. Entry roles commonly start around 6 to 10 LPA, mid level runs 12 to 22 LPA, and senior and architect roles reach well beyond that. The premium comes from the combination of security and infrastructure skill, which few candidates have together.

Why this role pays a premium

Most security people do not know infrastructure deeply. Most infrastructure people do not think like attackers. Cloud security sits exactly where those two overlap, and that overlap is genuinely scarce.

Add to that: almost every Indian company has migrated something to cloud in the last few years, and most of them did it faster than they secured it. The demand is not speculative.

What moves the number

Provider depth beats provider breadth

Deep AWS knowledge outearns shallow knowledge of all three. Most Indian demand is AWS first, Azure second. Learn one properly, then add the second by mapping concepts rather than starting over.

Infrastructure as code

A security engineer who can read and write Terraform reviews at a completely different speed and gets pulled into design decisions. This is the single clearest differentiator in interviews.

Automation

Writing the detection or the auto remediation rather than filing the ticket. Same pattern as the shift from L1 to detection engineering described in what a SOC analyst actually does.

Compliance fluency

Mapping cloud controls to ISO 27001, RBI frameworks and CERT-In requirements is boring and it is what senior roles are actually paid for in the Indian market. Context in CERT-In VAPT requirements.

Employer type

Moving from a services firm to a product company remains the largest single jump available, more than any certification.

Cloud security versus other security roles

Entry pay is generally higher than SOC analyst roles and comparable to or slightly above VAPT engineer roles. The ceiling is high because architect level cloud roles carry organisation wide scope.

The trade-off: less of the hands-on breaking that draws people into security, more design, review and compliance.

Certifications

Cloud certifications carry more weight here than in most security specialisations, because the provider ecosystems are well defined and HR recognises the names. That said, a documented lab where you built, broke and hardened an environment outperforms a certificate with nothing behind it.

How to enter without cloud experience

1. Free tier account, build a small three tier environment yourself
2. Deliberately misconfigure it: public storage, over permissive IAM, exposed metadata
3. Exploit your own misconfigurations, then fix them and document both
4. Write the whole thing up as a report, per the report guide
5. Learn enough Terraform to rebuild it as code

That project alone gets interviews. Most candidates for entry cloud security roles have a certification and have never built anything.
