SOC Analyst Salary in India
SOC Analyst Salary in India
SOC analyst salaries in India typically run 3.5 to 6 LPA at L1, 6 to 12 LPA at L2, and 12 to 25 LPA at L3 or specialist level. Detection engineering and threat hunting specialisations sit above that band. SOC roles start lower than offensive security roles but have a clearer internal progression ladder, which is the trade-off most people entering the field do not weigh properly.
The ranges are wide because tier titles mean different things at different employers. An L2 at a managed security provider and an L2 at a product company do very different work for different money.
Salary by tier
| Tier | Experience | Typical range (LPA) | Core work |
|---|---|---|---|
| L1 Analyst | 0 to 2 years | 3.5 to 6 | Alert triage, initial classification, escalation |
| L2 Analyst | 2 to 4 years | 6 to 12 | Investigation, containment, deeper log analysis |
| L3 / Senior | 4 to 7 years | 12 to 25 | Incident response lead, detection engineering, forensics |
| Specialist | 5+ years | 18 to 35+ | Threat hunting, detection engineering, SOC architecture |
| SOC Manager | 8+ years | 25 to 50+ | Team leadership, process, client and executive reporting |
Treat these as bands with real overlap. A strong L2 at a product company frequently out-earns an L3 at a large managed services provider.
What each tier actually does
L1 works the alert queue. Triage, classify, escalate or close. Volume is high and the work is repetitive by design, because the tier exists to filter noise so L2 does not drown. Shift work is standard, including nights.
L2 takes what L1 escalates and investigates it. Pivot across log sources, establish scope, decide containment. This is where the job becomes genuinely interesting and where most people either grow or leave.
L3 leads incidents, does forensics, and increasingly writes detections rather than just consuming them. The shift from consuming alerts to building them is the single biggest compensation jump available in blue team work.
What moves the number
Employer type
| Employer | Relative pay | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Managed security service providers | Lowest | High volume, many clients, fast learning, low pay |
| Large IT services | Low to moderate | Stability and brand, shallow depth |
| Big 4 and consulting | Moderate | Client variety, long hours |
| Enterprise internal SOC | Moderate to high | Deep knowledge of one environment |
| Product companies | High | Higher hiring bar, better tooling |
Most Indian SOC hiring happens at MSSPs, which is why the entry band looks low. It is also the fastest place to learn, because you see more incident variety in a year than an internal SOC sees in three. Treating an MSSP role as a two-year training investment rather than a destination is the pattern that works.
Skills that actually pay
- Detection engineering. Writing rules rather than responding to them. The clearest premium in blue team work and the biggest supply shortage.
- Scripting. Python or PowerShell for automation. An analyst who automates their own triage becomes visibly more valuable within months.
- Cloud log analysis. Most SOC training is Windows and network centric. Cloud-native detection skills are scarce.
- Threat hunting. Proactive rather than reactive. Requires understanding attacker behaviour, which is why blue team people who learn offensive technique get promoted faster. See red team vs blue team.
- Communication. Writing an incident report an executive acts on. Same skill that matters on the offensive side, covered in how to write a VAPT report.
SOC versus offensive security pay
A comparison worth making honestly, because people choose between these two paths without understanding the shape of each.
| SOC / Blue team | VAPT / Offensive | |
|---|---|---|
| Entry salary | Lower | Higher |
| Entry difficulty | Easier, more openings | Harder, portfolio expected |
| Progression | Clear tier ladder | Less structured |
| Senior ceiling | Comparable | Comparable |
| Shift work | Common at L1 and L2 | Rare |
| Job volume in India | Higher | Lower |
SOC is the easier door into the industry and it is a legitimate long-term path, not a consolation prize. Offensive ranges are in VAPT engineer salary in India.
How to move up a tier faster
- Build a home lab and run detections in it. An analyst who has written and tested their own rules interviews completely differently from one who has only closed tickets.
- Learn the offensive side. You cannot detect what you do not understand. Analysts who can explain the attack they are looking for get moved to detection engineering.
- Automate your own queue. Then show the automation in your next interview. It is the most direct evidence of L2 thinking.
- Specialise into cloud. The shortage is real and the premium is real.
- Move employer type deliberately. MSSP to internal SOC or product company is usually a larger jump than any internal promotion.
The shift work question
Worth stating plainly because job descriptions rarely do. L1 and often L2 roles in India involve rotating shifts including nights and weekends, because a SOC runs 24x7. This is the main reason people leave the tier rather than the pay.
It is also finite. L3, detection engineering and specialist roles are typically business hours. Knowing that the shift phase is a stage rather than the job makes the first two years easier to plan for.
Practise this
Build a free SIEM home lab, generate real attack telemetry against it, and write detections for what you generated. That single project answers most L1 and L2 interview questions before they are asked.
Hacklido is free and includes practical challenges. The TCSA SOC Analyst program covers SIEM operations, log analysis, threat hunting and incident response with live sessions.
Note: these are market-observed bands, not survey data. Verify against current listings for your city and target employer type before using them in a negotiation.
Frequently asked questions
What is the starting salary for a SOC analyst in India?
L1 roles typically fall between 3.5 and 6 LPA, with managed security service providers at the lower end and product companies at the upper end.
Is SOC analyst a good career in India?
Yes. It has more openings than offensive security, an easier entry path, and a clear tier progression. The trade-off is lower entry pay and shift work in the first years.
Which pays more, SOC analyst or penetration tester?
Penetration testing pays more at entry and mid level. The two converge at senior level, particularly in detection engineering and threat hunting specialisations.
Do SOC analysts work night shifts in India?
At L1 and often L2, yes. A SOC runs 24x7 so rotating shifts are standard. L3, detection engineering and specialist roles are typically business hours.
How do I become a SOC analyst without experience?
Build a SIEM home lab, generate attack telemetry, write your own detection rules and document the project. That evidence substitutes for experience in most L1 interviews.
