Certifications Ranked by ROI in India
Certifications Ranked by ROI in India
The best return in the Indian market comes from cheap hands-on certifications early, one strong practical certification mid-career, and specialisation certifications later. The worst return comes from expensive management certifications taken too early and from any certification bought before you can do the underlying work. Certifications buy access to interviews; they do not buy salary directly.
ROI here means cost against the realistic change in which interviews you get and what you can negotiate. Anyone quoting a specific rupee increase per certification is guessing.
The ranking
| Tier | Certification type | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best ROI | Entry practical certs (eJPT, PNPT tier) | Low cost, hands-on proof, real signal for a first role |
| Strong | OSCP | Expensive but changes technical interviews decisively |
| Strong | Cloud security certs | Genuine supply shortage, premium is real |
| Situational | CEH | High value if your target employers filter on it, near zero if not |
| Situational | Blue team / SOC certs | Good for defensive roles, ignored for offensive ones |
| Later career | CISSP, CISM | Real value at management level, wasted before it |
| Weak ROI | Vendor product certs | Locks you to one tool, expires with the product |
| Weakest | Anything bought before you can do the work | Certifies ability you do not have yet |
Why cheap practical certs win early
A first security role is the hardest one to get, because almost every listing asks for experience you do not have. What breaks that loop is proof you can do something, and the cheapest credible proof is a low-cost hands-on certification plus a portfolio.
Spending a large amount on OSCP before you can pass it is the most common expensive mistake in this field. The retake cost compounds the error. Honest assessment in is OSCP worth it.
Why CISSP and CISM are later-career
Both have genuine value, and both are commonly bought five years too early. They certify breadth of governance and management knowledge, and their experience requirements exist because the content only becomes useful once you are managing programmes rather than doing testing.
A three-year penetration tester with CISSP has bought a credential for a job they are not applying for yet.
The situational ones
CEH is the clearest example of a certification whose ROI depends entirely on your target market rather than on the certification itself. In large Indian IT services and compliance roles it functions as an access requirement. In product company penetration testing it does close to nothing. Full analysis in is CEH worth it and the head-to-head in OSCP vs CEH.
The twenty-listing test
Before buying anything, open twenty real job listings for the roles you actually want and count which certifications appear. Twenty minutes, and it beats every ranking article including this one, because it measures your market rather than the market in general.
If a certification appears in fewer than a quarter of them, you are buying a keyword nobody is filtering on.
What outperforms every certification
Demonstrable work. In our experience placing students, a candidate with three well-documented public writeups and no certification consistently beats a candidate with a certification and nothing to show, in the technical interview.
Certifications open doors. Evidence gets you through them. Project ideas in cyber security projects that get you interviews, and where certification fits in the overall sequence in cyber security roadmap for India.
Salary context
No certification triggers an automatic raise. What it changes is which interviews you get, and interviews are where compensation is decided. Ranges by role are in VAPT engineer salary in India and SOC analyst salary in India.
Practise this
Test where you actually are before spending. Hacklido is free and covers web, network and API challenges with a progression path from zero.
The Techonquer programs map to the practical certification path rather than the management one.
Note: exam fees change frequently. Verify current pricing on each issuing body's official site before making a decision.
Frequently asked questions
Which cyber security certification has the best ROI in India?
Low-cost hands-on certifications early in a career, because they provide practical proof at a fraction of the cost of premium exams and directly address the first-job problem.
Is CISSP worth it in India?
Yes, at management level. It is commonly bought too early, where it certifies governance knowledge for roles the holder is not yet applying for.
Do certifications increase salary directly?
Rarely. They change which interviews you get, and compensation is decided in the interview and the offer, not by the credential itself.
How many certifications should I have?
One that matches your target market at any given stage. Collecting certifications produces diminishing returns quickly compared with building demonstrable work.
Are vendor certifications worth it?
Only when you are committed to that vendor's stack. They tie your credential to a product roadmap and lose value when the product changes.
