Is CEH Worth It
Is CEH Worth It
CEH is worth it if your target employers filter resumes on it, which many large Indian IT services firms, government-adjacent organisations and compliance roles do. It is not worth it if you are targeting hands-on penetration testing at product companies or boutique consultancies, where technical interviewers treat it as close to neutral. It is an access certification, not a skills certification, and buying it for the wrong reason is where the money is wasted.
The criticism CEH receives is mostly accurate and mostly beside the point. It is judged as a skills exam when it is a knowledge exam, and it is bought as a skills exam by people who should be buying something else.
What CEH actually is
A large multiple-choice exam covering breadth across offensive security concepts: reconnaissance, scanning, enumeration, system hacking, malware, sniffing, social engineering, denial of service, session hijacking, web servers and applications, SQL injection, wireless, mobile, IoT, cloud and cryptography.
You can pass it without having successfully exploited anything. That is the central criticism and it is true. EC-Council offers CEH Practical as a separate hands-on exam precisely because the industry made this point loudly, but when a job listing says "CEH" it almost always means the multiple-choice version.
The honest case for it
- HR filters use it. In parts of the Indian services and compliance sector it functions as a checkbox requirement. No CEH, no resume review, regardless of ability.
- The breadth is real. A CEH holder has been exposed to wireless, IoT and compliance-adjacent material that a hands-on specialist may never touch.
- It is on approved lists. Government tenders and large enterprise vendor requirements frequently name it specifically.
- Employers pay for it. Very commonly. When someone else is paying, the cost objection disappears entirely.
- It is achievable quickly. Weeks, not months. If you need a certification on your resume before an appraisal cycle, it is the realistic option.
The honest case against it
- It proves knowledge, not ability. Technical interviewers know this and adjust accordingly.
- It expires. Continuing education credits and a paid renewal cycle, unlike OSCP.
- It is expensive for what it certifies. Relative to hands-on alternatives at similar or lower price points.
- It will not carry a technical interview. If you cannot demonstrate skill in the room, the certification does not help you.
- The breadth is shallow. Exposure to twenty domains at survey depth is not the same as competence in any of them.
The decision, made simple
| Your situation | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Employer is paying | Take it |
| Targeting large IT services or government roles | Take it, check listings first |
| Targeting GRC, audit or compliance | Take it, it fits that market |
| Targeting pentest at a product company | Skip it, get hands-on proof instead |
| Paying yourself, tight budget | Skip it, cheaper hands-on options exist |
| Complete beginner | Skip it, build fundamentals first |
The test that settles it
Open twenty real job listings for the specific roles you want, in the cities or remote setups you would accept. Count how many name CEH.
If it appears in more than half, it is buying you access and the cost is justified. If it appears in three, you are buying a keyword nobody is searching for. This takes twenty minutes and it is more reliable than any article, including this one.
What to do instead, if the answer is skip
Build evidence. Public writeups, a documented lab, a properly formatted report. In technical interviews these consistently outperform a certification with nothing behind it. Specific ideas in cyber security projects that get you interviews.
If you want a certification that proves hands-on ability at lower cost than OSCP, cheaper practical options exist and carry real signal. Comparison across the field is in certifications ranked by ROI in India, and the direct head-to-head is in OSCP vs CEH.
Practise this
Before spending on any certification, test where you actually are. Hacklido is free. If you can work the beginner track unassisted, you are ready to certify. If you cannot, no certification fixes that.

Note: exam pricing, renewal terms and syllabus versions change. Verify on the official EC-Council site before deciding.
Frequently asked questions
Is CEH still respected in 2026?
In Indian HR filtering and compliance roles, yes. Among technical interviewers assessing hands-on ability, it carries limited weight because it is a knowledge exam rather than a practical one.
Is CEH better than OSCP?
They serve different purposes. CEH gets your resume past filters at large employers. OSCP proves hands-on ability to technical interviewers. Neither substitutes for the other.
Does CEH expire?
Yes. It requires continuing education credits and a paid renewal cycle, unlike OSCP which does not expire.
Can I get a job with just CEH?
At large IT services firms and in compliance roles, it can get you interviews. It will not carry a technical interview on its own if you cannot demonstrate practical skill.
Is CEH good for beginners?
It gives structured breadth but does not build hands-on ability. Beginners generally get more from fundamentals and lab practice before spending on it.
