Red Team vs Blue Team
Red team attacks, blue team defends, purple team is the practice of running both together so the defenders learn from the attacks. Red teams simulate real adversaries against a live environment with minimal warning. Blue teams detect, investigate and respond. In India there are far more blue team openings, and red team roles pay more at entry but are harder to get into.
The actual difference in daily work
| Red team | Blue team | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Prove an attack path works | Detect and stop it |
| Measured by | Objectives reached, detections evaded | Time to detect, time to contain |
| Rhythm | Project based, weeks per engagement | Continuous, shift based |
| Output | A report with proven attack chains | Detections, playbooks, closed incidents |
| Openings in India | Fewer | Many more |
| Entry difficulty | Higher, portfolio expected | Lower at L1 |
| Shift work | Rare | Common early on |
Red team is not the same as penetration testing
This distinction gets blurred constantly in job ads. A penetration test is scoped, announced and measured by coverage: find as many vulnerabilities as possible in this application in ten days. A red team engagement is objective based and adversarial: get to the customer database without the SOC noticing, and we are not telling them you are coming.
Most jobs advertised as red team in India are penetration testing. Ask in the interview which one it actually is. The VAPT explainer covers the scoped version in detail.
What purple team really means
Not a third team. It is a working method where red and blue sit together: red runs a technique, blue checks whether it fired a detection, and if it did not, they build one on the spot. Then red runs a variation.
A day of that produces more defensive improvement than a quarter of separate engagements, which is why mature organisations moved to it. For a learner, being able to work both sides is exactly what makes you purple team capable, and it is rarer than it should be.
Which pays more in India
Red and offensive roles pay more at entry. The two converge at senior level, where detection engineering and threat hunting specialisations on the blue side reach comparable numbers. Detail in VAPT engineer salary and SOC analyst salary.
Worth saying plainly: the pay gap at entry is smaller than the difficulty gap in getting hired. Many people spend two years failing to break into offensive security who would have been employed in a SOC in three months and specialising by year two.
How to pick a side
Choose red if
- You enjoy open ended problems with no defined finish line
- You are willing to build a public portfolio before anyone hires you
- Writing a report that persuades an executive appeals to you as much as the exploit
Choose blue if
- You want the fastest realistic route into the industry
- You like pattern recognition and working with data at volume
- You would rather build systems that keep working than find one thing and move on
The skill that works on both sides
Understanding the attack. Blue team people who know how the technique actually works write far better detections. Red team people who understand what the SOC sees evade more effectively and write more useful findings.
That is why our syllabi overlap deliberately: the SOC program teaches the attacker lifecycle and the VAPT program teaches detection implications.
Start without choosing
You do not have to decide today. Work through free labs on both sides for a couple of months and notice which one you keep doing at midnight. That answer is more reliable than any salary table.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, red team or blue team?
Neither. Blue team has far more openings in India and an easier entry. Red team pays more at entry and has a higher bar. Senior compensation converges.
Is red team the same as penetration testing?
No. Penetration testing is scoped and announced, measured by coverage. Red teaming is objective based and adversarial, measured by whether you reached the goal undetected.
What is a purple team?
Not a separate team. It is red and blue working together in the same session, running a technique and immediately building the detection for it.
Can I switch from blue team to red team?
Yes, and it is a common path. SOC experience makes you a better attacker because you know what the defenders can see.
Which should a fresher start with in India?
Blue team, usually. More openings, lower entry bar, and the SOC experience transfers well if you move to offensive work later.
