PNPT vs OSCP
Both PNPT and OSCP are practical exams requiring live exploitation and a written report. PNPT costs substantially less and runs a full internal network engagement with an external assessment and a debrief. OSCP is harder, more widely recognised by Indian employers, and does not expire. PNPT is the better first practical certification; OSCP is the one that changes technical interviews.
The two are often framed as competitors. They work better as a sequence.
Head to head
| PNPT | OSCP | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Multi-day internal network engagement | 24-hour exam against target machines |
| Report required | Yes, and it is graded | Yes, and it is graded |
| Debrief | Live debrief presentation to assessors | None |
| Relative cost | Substantially lower | Higher, plus lab time and likely retake |
| Difficulty | Challenging, more forgiving pacing | Harder, severe time pressure |
| Focus | OSINT, AD attack chain, realistic engagement flow | Privilege escalation, buffer overflow, AD |
| Recognition in India | Growing, still limited in HR filters | Strong with technical interviewers |
| Expiry | Renewal cycle applies | Does not expire |
What PNPT does better
- It simulates a real engagement. External reconnaissance into initial access into domain compromise, which is the actual shape of most Indian internal assessments.
- The debrief is unique. You present findings live. No other certification at this level tests whether you can explain your work to a person, and that is the skill that decides promotions.
- Cost. For a self-funding Indian student this is not a small factor. It removes the compounding damage of a failed expensive attempt.
- Pacing. A multi-day window tests methodology rather than endurance.
What OSCP does better
- Recognition. Technical interviewers in India know it and adjust their baseline assumptions. PNPT often needs explaining.
- It does not expire. No renewal, no continuing education credits.
- Difficulty as signal. The low pass rate is part of what the credential communicates.
- Longevity. A decade of hiring managers have a consistent mental model of what it means.
Which to take
| Situation | Choice |
|---|---|
| First practical certification, self-funded | PNPT |
| Targeting internal network and AD work | PNPT, then OSCP later |
| Employer paying, targeting product companies | OSCP |
| Already testing professionally | OSCP |
| Weak at explaining findings out loud | PNPT, for the debrief alone |
| Cannot yet root a beginner box unassisted | Neither, build skill first |
The sequence that works
Build fundamentals on free labs. Take PNPT as the first practical proof at lower cost. Work professionally for a year or two. Take OSCP when you can pass it rather than to learn from it.
That order minimises the expensive mistake, which is buying OSCP too early. Honest assessment in is OSCP worth it, and how both compare to the certification most Indian HR filters use in OSCP vs CEH.
What neither gives you
Both are proxies. A candidate with three well-documented public writeups and no certification consistently outperforms one with a certification and nothing to show, in the technical interview. Practise this
Both exams grade the report. Practise writing one before you sit either, using the structure in how to write a VAPT report.
Hacklido is free. The OSCP preparation program covers privilege escalation, Active Directory and reporting, which are the shared core of both exams.
Note: pricing, renewal terms and exam structure change. Verify on the official TCM Security and OffSec sites before deciding.
Frequently asked questions
Is PNPT easier than OSCP?
Generally yes. PNPT is challenging but has a more forgiving multi-day window, while OSCP compresses everything into 24 hours with a low pass rate.
Is PNPT recognised in India?
Recognition is growing among technical interviewers but it appears in HR keyword filters far less often than OSCP or CEH. Check listings for your target roles.
Should I take PNPT before OSCP?
For most self-funded candidates, yes. It provides practical proof at lower cost and reduces the risk of an expensive failed OSCP attempt.
Does PNPT expire?
Yes, a renewal cycle applies. OSCP does not expire once earned.
What makes PNPT different from other certifications?
The live debrief. You present your findings to assessors, which tests whether you can explain your work to a person. No comparable certification does this.
